Will Smith on Fresh Prince reboot: “When hell freezes over”
Will Smith has somewhat scuppered our hopes of seeing the much rumoured Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot on our screens any time soon.
Talk of a spinoff of the ’90s sitcom began last August, when TVLine reported that Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment was in “the very early stages” of developing the family comedy, which would put “a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series”.
Now, speaking of when we might see the reboot with co-star Margot Robbie on the press tour for Suicide Squad, Smith said:
“I don’t think ever, like pretty close to when hell freezes over. Pretty close, like ‘we’re going to leave that one alone’.”
A few months after the initial story broke, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton) had expressed his skepticism, telling HuffPost Live:
“If it happened, it wouldn’t be Fresh Prince. It would be something that’s taking the story of the show and having all new people do something. To me, that’s not Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. There’s one Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Is Will Smith starring in it? No. Then it ain’t no Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
So there you have it, kids. We’ll just have to stick to the re-runs for now.
