Will Game of Thrones reveal the identity of ‘The Prince That Was Promised’?
Fans are speculating that the reveal of ‘The Price That Was Promised’ from the A Song Of Ice And Fire lore could happen in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones.
The discussion comes after the release of several first-look images from season seven, which includes glimpses into the future for the Lannister twins, Queen Daenerys Targaryen and even the young Mormont leader Lyanna.
One particular picture features Sam and Gilly, who appear to be studying in the library at The Citadel. The parchment that Gilly is holding up to the camera is readable, however, and Reddit quickly worked out exactly what the text read.
According to them, it is a slightly-altered passage from The World of Ice and Fire which describes Azor Ahai – a mythical saviour figure who is also known as The Prince That Was Promised.
Fans have long sing speculated the identity of The Prince That Was Promised, with many believing it to be Jon Snow. According to prophecy, the Prince will be born amidst salt and smoke and have Targaryen heritage.
In the series, Red Priestess Melisandre – whose Lord of Light will select The Prince That Was Promised as a servant – first believed Stannis Baratheon to be the real deal. However, her faith was shaken after Stannis was defeated in battle by the Bolton armies and later executed by Brienne of Tarth.
Melisandre has since come to believe the true Prince That Was Promised is Jon Snow, after she was successfully able to resurrect him with the Lord’s power.
However, knowing Game of Thrones this could easily be a hint in the wrong direction. Others have speculated it could be Daenerys Targaryen or one of the Lannister siblings, who may have been illegitimate children of the Mad King Aerys.
