WATCH the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix drama ‘The Get Down’
After months of waiting, we’ve finally seen the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven Netflix drama, The Get Down. Somehow, it’s managed to get us even more excited than we were before.
Named after an old funk term for the section of a record that makes people dance, this latest project from the Australian auteur who brought us Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby focusses on a group of kids growing up in late-1970s New York; a world where hip-hop rises from the ashes of disco.
Blending a tasty concoction of music and dance genre, the trailer alludes to the intertwining strands of each character’s story, including Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Tremaine Browne Jr and Skylan Brooks as a crew of teenagers exploring the musical upheavals in their neighbourhood, and Herizen Guardiola as an aspiring disco diva from a disapproving religious family.
Including a version the Supremes’ “Up the Ladder to the Roof”, this three-minute taster makes us hungry to see more of the show, which is one of a handful of recent ’70s throwback series including the latest season of Fargo, and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming HBO music drama, Vinyl.
Also starring Jaden Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jimmy Smits, and Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito, part one of The Get Down is due to premiere on Netflix later this year.
