Sorry Kids, A Game of Thrones Movie Is Not Happening
George RR Martin, author of the award-winning series Game of Thrones, has spoken out to deny rumours that a spinoff movie of the show is in the works.
Martin has spoken out on Live Journal to deny the validity of a Daily Star report claiming that a movie based on his work is being developed at HBO. The newspaper had quoted Martin as saying that he was unable to work directly on the supposed movie because of his other writing commitments.
Martin has since clarified that fan speculation about a movie based on Robert’s Rebellion to seize the Iron Throne is “completely false”.
“No one is working on any movie just now. And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert’s Rebellion,” he insisted.
The writer deplored: “My story is a combination of stuff [rather than one single story].
“I didn’t need the money so I had the power to say the sexiest word in Hollywood – ‘No’.”
The explanation gives weight to Martin’s previous decisions to avoid turning Game of Thrones into a movie, and in terms of writing commitments, is near enough impossible given that the mastermind behind the world of Westeros is hard at work on the next A Song of Ice and Fire book The Winds of Winter as well as three other new TV shows.
However, we might not have to wait that long to find out what’s next for the Game of Throne’s gang as Martin’s Spanish editor recently hinted that Winds of Winter could finally arrive in 2016 just in time for Game of Thrones season six – as if we weren’t already whipped up into a frenzy about the future of the franchise.
Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic in the UK and HBO in the US next spring.
