Sir Elton John is writing a Devil Wears Prada musical
“Gird your loins” because The Devil Wears Prada is officially being turned into a musical! And if that wasn’t chic enough, Sir Elton John will be writing the music.
The legendary Sir Elton is no stranger to a musical, having already been behind the likes of The Lion King and Billy Elliot. Now, the “Tiny Dancer” singer will be working his magic on everyone’s favourite fashion-scene film, The Devil Wears Prada.
In a statement, Sir Elton John spoke about the writing process. He said: “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting.
“I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world.
“I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
Elton will be working alongside playwright Paul Rudnick as they put on the musical production, and the show will be made by Fox Stage Productions, a company that started up in 2013 to create musicals based on Fox films.
Here’s to hoping that the stage show will have the same levels of sass as the film adaptation, although we’re not quite sure how anyone will match the greatness of Meryl Streep.
Meryl was nominated for an Oscar after her hilariously blunt portrayal in the movie. She played the hellish fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly whose impossible demands Andrea (played by Anne Hathaway) attempts to satisfy as her personal assistant.
The film was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and made a whopping $326m at the worldwide box office.
The premiere date for The Devil Wears Prada broadway show is still to be confirmed.
