Sam Smith has written a song for X Factor winner Matt Terry
X Factor winner Matt Terry is set to record a song written by Sam Smith.
The “Lay Me Down” singer declined the offer to duet with the X Factor contestant ahead of the show’s final last year. However, Sam Smith has now fully made up for it by agreeing to write his next single.
Matt unveiled the big news in an interview with the Daily Star this week. Reminiscing over his rendition of Sam’s song “Writing On The Wall” on the ITV series, Matt said: “When I did his song it was an amazing moment. So to record a song written by him now is so exciting.”
Matt was able to meet his idol during the X Factor live shows in 2016.
“What are the chances? It’s just crazy,” Matt gushed at the time. “I had a bunch of questions to ask him about his career. It was pretty cool. He’s an artist I’ve listened to since he started and I think his career is just insane.
“He told me he’d heard me sing “I’ll Be There”, which he thought sounded good. He said to me to just keep doing what I’m doing.”
The X Factor champion nabbed himself the Number 3 spot in the UK Singles Chart last month with debut single and festive hit “When Christmas Comes Around”. The song was written by global success Ed Sheeran and Matt has joked that he owes Ed a Nando’s for the track.
Talking on the Big Top 40 radio show, Matt said: “I haven’t met Ed yet, but I’ve tweeted him.”
When asked whether he’d like to send a message to the singer, Matt replied: “Ed, man, I love you – thank you so much. I’m going to buy you a Nando’s, I’ll buy you a beer. Whatever you want!”
X Factor will return later this year to ITV.
