RECAP: Unforgotten Episode 1
ITV’s latest crime drama Unforgotten stormed onto our televisions last week with a gripping plot line and fantastic performances from its strong cast.
The series follows DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DS Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) as they set out to investigate a cold murder case after discovering the bones of a young man under a demolished house.
Episode two will hit our screens tonight at 9pm – if you didn’t get a chance to catch the first episode, we’ve got a recap for you, but if you’re planning on catching up, beware… spoilers follow.
Unforgotten begins with the discovery of human bones under a demolished house in North West London. The remains give the police no initial clues – it is only upon the discovery of what appears to be a car key near the body that they are able to deduce the death must have occurred around 40 years ago.
In typical clever crime drama fashion, the car key leads them on a trail with vital evidence at the end: the diary. The investigation moves on rapidly with the discovery of the diary and some fancy forensic work. We now know the bones belonged to Jimmy Sullivan who went missing in 1976.
In a sudden upsurge of tension and intrigue, four names are also found scribbled in the diary: that of Beth, Father Rob, Frankie C and Mr. Slater. We are introduced to these seemingly ordinary people going about their daily lives. Except now they are potential suspects and everything they do is now under suspicion.
Sir Phillip Cross (Trevor Eve) is a working-class boy who made good as a successful businessman. As a young man he fell into the wrong crowd and it may be about to catch up with him.
Lizzie Wilton (Ruth Sheen) lives with her husband Ray in Croydon. She helps Ray to run a community football team in memory of their dead son.
Father Robert Greaves (Bernard Hill) is a likeable family man with a parish in South East England. He worked as a chaplain at Arlingham House between 1972 and 1983 and so is already under police investigation.
Lastly is Eric Slater (Tom Courtenay), an elderly, wheelchair-bound man who cares for his wife, Claire (Gemma Jones), as she begins to deteriorate with dementia. It is clear they aren’t coping well and should really have help as Claire herself points out to her husband. “We can’t leave” is Eric’s response. What is he hiding?
Instantly addictive, Unforgotten has got us hooked and wanting more. So many questions hanging in the air and it’s down to Cassie and Sunny to find the answers.
The second episode of Unforgotten airs tonight (15.10.2015) on ITV 1 at 9pm.
