Podcast Serial coming to our TV screens
For anyone who recognises the phrase, “this a Global Tel Link prepaid call from, Adnan Sayed, an inmate at the Maryland Correctional Facility…”, this is great news.
2014’s podcast, Serial – which has now been downloaded over 130 million times – told the story of Adnan Syed who was arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999. In a similar vein to Netflix’s Making a Murderer, the podcast casts doubt over the evidence used to lock Adnan away.
In the podcast, creator Sarah Koenig regularly speaks to Adnan along with other students from his school, his family and lawyers in order to gain a detailed picture of the events surrounding Hae’s death.
Airing on Investigation Discovery in the UK on 15th June, Adnan Sayed: Innocent or Guilty? will explore what has happened to Adnan since the end of the Serial podcast in 2015. Following the final episode of the podcast, Adnan has been granted an appeal based on the grounds that his defense lawyer provided ineffective counsel during his original trial. The programme will also give insight into the potential for an alibi given by classmate Asia McClain to be submitted for evidence.
Claire Laycock, Head of Investigation Discovery UK has said that,
“With a judge expecting to make a decision at any time, we want to give our viewers not only the crucial information surrounding Adnan Syed’s case, but also the personal, first-hand accounts of what to expect from key players.”
Asia McClain will be amongst interviewees that will also include Adnan’s best friend Saad Chaudry, the lawyer who represented Adnan at his bail hearing, a juror from the 2000 trial, and the Woodlawn High teacher who was the last person to see Hae on campus.
Tune into Investigation Discovery UK on Wednesday 15th June to see Adnan Sayed: Innocent or Guilty?
