MCM 2015: ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ Star Gideon Emery Talks Netflix Success
As part of our special MCM London Comic Con coverage, we met up with Marvel’s Daredevil star Gideon Emery (Anatoly) at a press conference, in which he talked about the advantages of Netflix compared to network television.
Speaking of Netflix, which is home to the much-acclaimed Marvel’s Daredevil, Emery said: “They’re not tied down by the advertisers. Advertisers dictate a lot of what TV networks can put out. Netflix has broken all the rules. One sense in terms of delivery – an entire series in one go – but also in terms of boundaries they can push.”
“As an actor, I think it’s interesting. You can work on a show and know that you’re going to be shooting a whole season. As opposed to the typical model where you shoot a bunch of pilots and then they look at it and they go, okay, we’ll put three of them out. Two out of three get pulled after a handful of episodes. Whereas with Netflix they go, this is the one we’re going with, then boom, they just do it. I think that’s nice.”
Asked about his knowledge of the masked superhero before taking the role of a Russian gangster in the series, Emery said he “knew a little bit” but admitted he was no expert. Speaking of his lack of familiarity with the series, he said, “it was as exciting for me [as it was to the audience]!”
He again praised Netflix and Marvel’s work, saying, “Netflix and Marvel were very hands on – they obviously knew what they wanted to create!”
