ITV to show new Lethal Weapon TV series
ITV has picked up the rights to air the upcoming TV version of Lethal Weapon in the UK.
Rebooting the film series which first took worldwide audiences by storm in 1987, the series will reunite iconic cop duo Riggs and Murtaugh (previously played by Danny Glover and Mel Gibson), who are back and working the streets of a crime-ridden modern-day LA.
Now starring Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford in the leading roles, the new series joins the ever growing list of classic films remade for television, including Rush Hour, Uncle Buck, and Training Day.
Kevin Lygo, director of television for ITV, said of the acquisition: “It’s rare that we find an acquisition with that sweet spot potential – the best production values and hugely entertaining drama, that we think can appeal to the biggest and broadest audiences and take up a place in ITV primetime”.
Sasha Breslau, who bought the show for ITV, said it is a “superb” reboot, “with the perfect mix of action, heart, humour and terrific chemistry” between Wayans and Crawford. “I’m thrilled and excited to see the show take its place alongside ITV’s popular homegrown dramas,” she said.
Can we look forward to some Gibson/Glover cameos? We sure hope so.
Lethal Weapon is yet to receive a UK release date, however we can expect it to take a primetime spot on ITV. Stay tuned for more news as we hear it, until then check out the trailer below!
