Game of Thrones unveils return date and trailer
We spend all year desperate for new titbits on Game of Thrones, and suddenly a wealth of teasers come along at once.
Following yesterday’s teaser poster, HBO has confirmed that season seven of Game of Thrones will start in the United States on Sunday, July 16. Meanwhile, Sky Atlantic has confirmed new episodes will be simulcast at 2am on Monday mornings, with the premiere scheduled for July 17. As usual, new episodes of the series will repeat at 9pm the following day for those of us who aren’t students.
To add to that excitement, HBO also dropped the seventh season’s first trailer.
The stylish new trailer doesn’t offer us much in the way of new footage, but does recall some of our favourite moments in Game of Thrones to date. The video features stylised versions of the Westerosi house sigils fighting one another, with audio footage from previous seasons on top. There are throwbacks to Ned Stark’s death, the Red Wedding, Joffrey’s assassination and Cersei’s ascension to Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Most interestingly, there’s a lot of focus on Daenerys Targaryen and her unique family history. With Dany finally on her way to the Seven Kingdoms to challenge for power, it seems like her family’s legacy will hold more weight than ever before on the show. Let’s also remember it was revealed that Jon Snow is very likely a close family member based on THAT season six finale reveal.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres exclusively on 17th July on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV at 2am, repeated at 9pm on the same day.
