Channel 4 Documentaries to Follow Transgender Children
In the wake of Louis Theroux’s recent BBC special Transgender Kids, which was viewed by 1.68 million Brits on the night it aired, Channel 4 has now announced that it will be examining the worlds of transgender children in three new documentaries to be aired this year.
The first of these, Young and Trans, meets the families of young transgender children in the UK, and follows their efforts to work out the best paths for their kids’ futures.
The second documentary, The Camp, visits an American summer camp for transgender children and their families.
Then, The Testosterone Diaries offers an intimate profile of a group of young transgender men and their transitions, as recorded via personal web diaries.
We’ve been loving the recent boom in progressive portrayals of trans and gender diverse people on TV recently. Last year, Laverne Cox made history as the first trans woman to be nominated for an Emmy, for her role as Sophia in Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. This year, Amazon’s Transparent, which tells the coming-out story of a transgender father, won the award for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) at the Golden Globes. Now the UK is catching up, with BBC Two working on its upcoming transgender sitcom, Boy Meets Girl, and we look forward to Channel 4 advancing the good fight further with this new series of documentaries.
In the meantimes, Louis Theroux’s Transgender Kids is available to stream on BBC iPlayer until April 26th.
